Health Control Game Timer for the Nintendo DS

Image
Health Control Game Timer for the Nintendo DS Video game timers of one sort or another are hardly anything new, but timers for handheld game consoles are a considerably rarer sight, especially ones as elaborate as this so-called Health Control Game Timer for the Nintendo DS. Apparently not content with simply shutting off the handheld after a predetermined period of time, this one also packs a built-in proximity sensor that'll set off an alarm if you're holding the DS too close to your face. Of course, considering that the device can simply be yanked from the DS at any time, this isn't exactly the most effective tool for parents looking to curb their kids' gaming habits but, if you lack a little self control yourself, you can grab one of these now for ¥ 3,990, or just about $40.

BenQ Qisda QPD-111 Creative Design Center MID

Image
BenQ Qisda QPD-111 Creative Design Center MID Not that we have anything against products that don't exist, but it would seem to us convenient to have something to show on the other end of a couple design awards. BenQ's Qisda QPD-111 just won a red dot and iF award, but BenQ doesn't seem quite ready to show it off to the world. The MID sports a 5-inch screen, and is "designed for highly mobile people pursuing the best Internet experience while on the go." That fancy little red "Hot Key" sends you to the world wide internet with a single press, and the device can handle multitouch pinch-to-zoom and other gestures for browsing. There's also a built-in accelerometer, which lets you switch between communication and Internet functions with a little shake of your precious, imaginary MID. There's obviously no information on price or availability at this point -- we're not even sure what OS it's running -- but it's certainly a sexy and almost ...

HP TouchSmart tx2z with 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD

Image
HP TouchSmart tx2z with 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD In the market for a multitouch tablet? HP's TouchSmart tx2z, both the readers' and editors' choice for Tablet PC of the Year in the 2008 Engadget Awards, currently has two stackable discounts totaling $450, dropping the price here to a much more manageable $650. That includes an AMD Turion X2 Dual-core processor, 4GB RAM and a 320GB hard drive.

Jabra HALO Bluetooth headset

Image
Jabra HALO Bluetooth headset Finding awesome stereo Bluetooth hardware is challenging. There are a few good reasons for that: one, you've got to somehow pack a battery inside the headset itself, two, you've got radio circuitry in there, and three, it's all got to last a bunch of hours between charges. We're not saying that Jabra's just-announced HALO is for everyone, but it's an awfully interesting product -- probably one of the best A2DP sets we've seen -- and unlike most on-ear sets, it folds small enough to carry with you pretty much everywhere you go. The jury's out on audio quality and fit until we get our hands on an actual review unit (they're showing some pretty loose pre-production prototypes at CTIA) but considering how the HALO looks and works, we're cautiously stoked that this is going to end up being one of the better multimedia accessories of the year.

Telus launches Samsung OMNIA

Image
Telus launches Samsung OMNIA Telus announced it's sitting down with the Samsung OMNIA fanclub today. You should all be well versed in all things OMNIA by now, but if not, here's a quick rundown. This slate features a 3.2-inch touchscreen to let Windows Mobile 6.1 with TouchWiz shine, 8GB of storage, a 5 megapixel camera, WiFi, and the cute little touch sensitive d-pad. Pricing is $499 off contract, $449 (roughly $400) on one year, $349 ($280) on two years, and $129 (about $100) on a three year stint. While we do love this handset, the fact we know Verizon's got it for only 99 bills makes that pricing a little hard to chew. Of course, if you're getting an itch for a new set -- and don't live in the US -- Samsung's OMNIA is available on Telus' site right now.

Kyocera G2GO and Laylo

Image
Kyocera G2GO and Laylo To Americans, the full-QWERTY G2GO will end up being known better as the X-tc on Virgin Mobile when it launches next week; the Laylo numeric slider hasn't been announced for launch on any carrier just yet, but Kyocera assured us that they're in talks to bring it to market (likely also with Virgin Mobile, if we had to muster a guess). Neither device is going to blow anyone away with sheer, unadulterated functionality or beauty, but they make perfect sense for Virgin's value-conscious audience, and the G2GO / X-tc might be Virgin's best-looking QWERTY device to date. We struggled a bit with the Laylo's send and end keys -- they're not tactile, but the slide mechanism's loose enough to make you wonder about the build quality every time your fingertip touches the icon. Pre-production jitters, perhaps?
