Century Netbook Stand Cools Your Lap, Reads & Burns DVDs

While it wasn’t the reason I ultimately decided to part ways with my EEE netbook, the lack of optical drive did make things kind of a hassle when I decided to install XP. The problem was resolved with a $20 DVD-ROM drive and an IDE to USB 2 adapter cable, but this slim netbook stand that features a built-in DVD super multi-drive from Century looks like a better alternative.
It connects to your netbook via USB and supports nearly every sub-Blu-ray disc format you could possibly need. The slim form factor means it’s not that difficult to travel with when you need to, and it even doubles as a cooling pad thanks to a built-in 4cm fan. It will be available in Japan on Friday, but the $100 price tag is kind of a hard sell given it’s roughly 1/3 the price of the average netbook.

Hitachi intros two new portable HDDs, SimpleNET NAS adapter If you'll recall, Hitachi GST snapped up Fabrik in February, and with that acquisition came the latter company's highly-regarded SimpleTech line. Today, Hitachi is introducing its first consumer products since the pickup, and while you'll notice a hint of 'Simple' in the titles, the branding is all Hitachi. It was August of 2007 when Orange first got all weird on Nokia over the then-wild concept of a manufacturer-owned and operated music store -- bear in mind the iPhone hadn't launched very widely at that time -- and look how far we've come. The two companies have just announced that the venerable Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be available starting May 29 loaded up with Comes With Music, Nokia's all-you-can-eat service that brings endless downloadable tracks through its Music Store. In Orange's case, Comes With Music will be available on any of five special plans starting at £25 a month (about $38), meaning that you'll be able to nab music for the duration of your two-year contract. As long as DRM's in the mix, you're basically locked into your contract for as long as you want the definitive Bryan Adams collection that you've downloaded -- so we're hoping Nokia nixes that...
